 | U.S. Faces Shortage of Engineers |
Anonymous writes "Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
January 27, 2009 American girls aged 8 to 17 say their parents encourage them to become actresses more often than engineers. Youngsters of both genders avoid careers that involve math and science because they lack confidence in those topics, “despite the fact that the largest number of kids ranked math and science as their favorite subjects.” All told, 85% of kids say that they are not interested in an engineering career, according to a survey released by ASQ, a Milwaukee-based industry group that champions management processes meant to raise the quality of products and services. The organization said 14,000 of its 90,000 members hail from engineering-driven companies that rely on technology innovation and problem-solving skills.

 | Diligence, speed will help secure 2009 college aid |
Anonymous writes "By DAVE CARPENTER, AP Personal Finance Writer Dave Carpenter, Ap Personal Finance Writer – Sat Jan 24, 3:02 pm ET
Karen May admits to middle-of-the-night anxiety spells over the daunting challenge of coming up with the money to put her daughter, now a high school senior, through college.
The stock market's steep dive has knocked 25 to 30 percent off the value of the 529 savings plan she'd been contributing to since Brie was born, putting her goal of contributing $15,000 a year out of reach. But the 48-year-old accountant from Vernon, N.Y., has found a key way to hopefully make some of it back besides cutting spending, skipping vacation and working a second job: She spends hours every week researching financial aid options with her daughter. | You Decide Who is the Most Qualified |
Anonymous writes "Let me see if I have this straight.....
·If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic, different." ·Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.
·If your name is Barack you are a radical, unpatriotic Muslim. ·Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.
·Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable. ·Attend five different small colleges before graduating, you are well grounded.
·If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 y ears as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.
